For the benefit of all the worshipers present, I delivered the message bilingually, alternating between Spanish and English every few sentences. I preserved that format below.

Algunas cosas autobiográficas: Soy el Gerente del Programa de Nuevas Iglesias en el Centro Denominacional de la IELA (Iglesia Luterana Evangélica en América). Soy ordenado como sacerdote en La Iglesia Episcopal y vivo en Savannah, Georgia. Antes de comenzar en este trabajo denominacional el año pasado, era el pastor de una iglesia en el centro de Savannah por ocho años. Ahora, trabajo regularmente con Pastor Peter Olson (y todos los Directores de Misión Evangélica de los 65 sínodos de la IELA) para apoyar a todas las nuevas iglesias luteranas. Pr. Peter y Padre Álvaro me invitaron a Esperanza para apoyarles en discernir los próximos pasos del futuro de este ministerio. Juntos con Pra. Kara, me invitaron a predicar esta mañana.
A few things about me: I am the Program Manager for New Church Starts in the ELCA Churchwide Organization. I am ordained in The Episcopal Church and I live in Savannah, Georgia. Before beginning this denominational role last year, I served as the pastor of a church in downtown Savannah for eight years. Now, I work with Pastor Peter Olson (and the Directors for Evangelical Mission in all 65 synods) to support all the new Lutheran churches. Pr. Peter and Padre Álvaro invited me to Esperanza to support them in discerning the next steps for the future of their ministry. Together with Pr. Kara, they invited me to preach to all of you this morning.
Ya comienzo con el sermón. El tema es “Traducción es Amor.” La traducción es un componente básico la fe cristiana. No pudiéramos estar aquí en esta iglesia sin la traducción. Desde los tiempos bíblicos, necesitaban la traducción para compartir las Buenas Nuevas de Dios. ¿Por qué? Porque los dones de Dios son para todos los seres humanos, no solo de una cultura o de un idioma. Y la traducción tiene el poder de unirnos a pesar de tales diferencias.
Now, let’s start the sermon! Our theme today is “Translation is Love.” Translation is a basic building block of the Christian faith. We could not be here in this church without translation. Since biblical times, we have needed translation to share the Good News of God. Why? Because the gifts of God are for all human beings, not just for one culture or one language. And translation has the power to unite us despite those differences.
Considera la lectura de Nehemías. Los israelitas fueron desterrados por la fuerza de Jerusalén a Babilonia por setenta años. Dos generaciones de israelitas exilios se criaron en Babilonia, fuera de la patria. El gobernador Nehemías y el sacerdote Esdras guiaron a los exilios en su regreso a Jerusalén. Pero en esos setenta años los hijos y los nietos de los exilios olvidaron su idioma materno. En vez de hablar hebreo, aprendieron el idioma de los babilonios, llamado arameo.
Consider our reading from Nehemiah. The Israelites were forcibly removed from Jerusalem to Babylon. They lived there for seventy years. Two generations of exiled Israelites were born and raised in Babylon, away from their homeland. The governor Nehemiah and the priest Ezra led the exiles in their return to Jerusalem. But in those seventy years, the children and grandchildren of the exiles forgot their mother tongue. Instead of speaking Hebrew, they had learned the language of the Babylonians, called Aramaic.
Aunque la Ley de Dios (los cinco libros de Génesis a Deuteronomio llamado Torah) fue escrito en hebreo, la gente desearon escucharla y aprenderla. Pues Nehemías nos dice que Esdras y los sacerdotes “leyeron en el libro de la ley de Dios, interpretándolo y dándole el sentido para que entendieran la lectura” (8:8). Antes de traducir las escrituras en papel, los israelitas interpretaron su lectura en vivo. Y los sacerdotes predicaron sobre la ley, explicándola para que la gente entendiera y daba gracias a Dios.
Even though the Law of God (the five books from Genesis to Deuteronomy called Torah) was written in Hebrew, the people wanted to hear it and learn it. So, Nehemiah tells us that Ezra and the priests, “read from the book, from the law of God, with interpretation. They gave the sense, so that the people understood the reading” (8:8). Before they translated the Scriptures on paper, the Israelites interpreted their readings live. The priests preached about the Law, explaining it so that the people understood and gave thanks to God.
De igual modo, en los tiempos de Jesús y de la Iglesia Primitiva, siguieron traduciendo. Jesús leía del profeta Isaías en hebreo y predicaba a la gente de Nazaret en arameo, pero el Evangelio de San Lucas fue escrito unos años después en griego. Y nosotros leemos sus palabras en español e inglés. ¡Traducción, traducción, traducción!
Similarly, in the days of Jesus and the Early Church, they kept on translating. Jesus read from the Prophet Isaiah in Hebrew, and he preached to the people of Nazareth in Aramaic. But the Gospel of Luke was written a few years later in Greek. And now, we read these words in English and Spanish. Translation, translation, translation!
Traducción es como un puente. Tiene la potencia de unir el pueblo de Dios a través de las divisiones sociales, culturales y de lenguajes. Porque el acto de traducción es una expresión de amor. Para interpretar de un idioma a otro, se necesita aprender ambos idiomas, conocer a ambos pueblos, y apreciar las riquezas y matices de ambas culturas. Se necesita digerir las palabras de San Pablo: “Hay muchos miembros, pero un solo cuerpo. Y el ojo no puede decirle a la mano: «No te necesito»; ni tampoco la cabeza a los pies: «No los necesito». … Si un miembro sufre, todos los miembros sufren con él; y si un miembro es honrado, todos los miembros se regocijan con él. Ahora bien, ustedes son el cuerpo de Cristo, y cada uno individualmente un miembro de él (1 Corintios 12:20-21, 26-27).
Translation is like a bridge. It has the power to unite the people of God across our social, cultural, and language divisions. Because the act of translation is an expression of love. To interpret one language to another, you need to learn both languages, get to know both peoples, and appreciate the richness and nuances of both cultures. You need to inwardly digest the Apostle Paul’s words: “There are many members yet one body. The eye cannot say to the hand, ‘I have no need of you,’ nor again the head to the feet, ‘I have no need of you.’ … If one member suffers, all suffer together with it; if one member is honored, all rejoice together with it. 12:27 Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it.” (1 Corinthians 12:20-21, 26-27).
Otra vez les digo: “Si un miembro sufre, todos los miembros sufren con él; y si un miembro es honrado, todos los miembros se regocijan con él” (1 Corintios 12:26). En los días que vienen algunos de nosotros van a sufrir. Y es fácil pensar que estén solos. Pero Dios nunca te abandona, y Dios te da la Iglesia entera como un cuerpo para apoyarte en los tiempos difíciles.
Again, I say to you, “If one member suffers, all suffer together with it; if one member is honored, all rejoice together with it” (1 Corinthians 12:26). In the days to come, some of us in this room will suffer. And it will be easy to forget those who look different or talk different or have different government documentation or who are suddenly not here in Tulsa anymore. But God does not forget. And God knit us together as one Body of Christ, the Church, to support one another through good times and bad.
